Welcome!
Waterloo’s Department of Sociology & Legal Studies offers both MA and PhD programs in Sociology with highly personalized and flexible instruction. Distinguished by diverse research opportunities, rigorous training in contemporary and classical theory and in quantitative, qualitative and interpretive methods, our programs also provide an excellent grounding in a range of theoretical orientations.
We currently have 15 faculty members teaching and supervising graduate students, plus over 10 affiliated and adjunct professors from other UW departments and colleges. To learn about the research activity in our department, see the faculty research page, graduate student profiles as well as recent dissertations & theses.
Our programs feature options that are particularly valuable for developing professional skills as sociologists in academic and non-academic careers. These include co-op work terms and the MA Specialization in Survey Methodology.
Please explore the Sociology grad program web pages by following the links on the left. If you would like to discuss any details about our programs, please contact me at kmbonner@uwaterloo.ca or contact our graduate program assistant, Ilona Kosa at ikosa@uwaterloo.ca
