Sociology and Legal Studies

Sociology is the study of social life and the social, economic, and political dynamics and dimensions of social relations and social change. Sociology and Legal Studies at Waterloo is a stimulating and expanding department, and consists of sociologists and socio-legal scholars engaging in innovative teaching styles and research programs. 

The Department offers a full range of challenging and exciting undergraduate and graduate courses, and provides an inspiring environment for research students and researchers.  Faculty members in the department place a high value on research and teaching that engages with fundamental and crucial aspects of social life.  The research projects of the faculty and students address a wide array of sociological and socio-legal inquiry including issues of: social change and social inequalities; state policy, crime, security, and governance; class, gender, ethnicity, health, religion, and education; migration, immigration, and international development; and historical inquiry, social theories, and methodologies.

Our most important commitment is to ensure that our undergraduate and graduate students receive an outstanding education, developing their sociological imagination and the research skills they will need for their future careers.  Over the years, our graduates have been successful in pursuing careers in government departments, policy and research institutes, universities, legal professions, policing, and non-profit organizations.
